Migrating Email from Sun One Messaging Server

May 28, 2010 at 8:22 PM

We currently use Luminis Portal and  Sun One Messaging Server for Mail.  We are about to move to Live@edu and would like to migrate users existing email over to their live@edu account.  We have tested the email migration and it works - only catch is we do not know user's passwords.  We have attempted to use the anonymous login to our Messaging Server but it does not work.  How  have other sites handled migrating email?

Sara,

I am part of the implementation team for the rollout of Live@edu at Valdosta State University.  We have also moved from our Luminis Portal to Windows Live.  What we have done to utilize the IMAP e-mail migration tool is to use the Luminis cptool utility to stuff a default password into our entire LDAP (after making a backup, of course).  Here's the timeline that we have implemented:

  1. Update e-mail MX records for valdosta.edu - 8pm Eastern Time on 2010-6-4
  2. Begin stuffing password on Luminis LDAP using cptool  - 8:05pm Eastern Time on 2010-6-4
  3. Begin mail migration tool - approx. 10pm Eastern Time on 2010-6-4

In conjunction with step 2 we replaced the login.html file with content indicating where to go to get into the new Live@edu system.

In our experience, with over 31,000 user accounts, it is taking much longer than initially anticipated to migrate the accounts.  We had implemented a 250MB inbox limitation several years earlier.  At approximately 12:00pm on Saturday, 2010-6-5, the migration tool had migrated 881 of the user accounts.  We prioritized our faculty and staff accounts by placing them at the top of the csv file, so hopefully the accounts with the most mail would done first as the students tend to have smaller inboxes stored on the server.

Andy,

How long did the migration end up taking?  Any issues after the migration of mail finished?

Thanks,

Stephen
